His voice, his stupid cowboy costume, Blake Crawford's mercurial motion capture work, it all completely contradicts itself, but makes him genuinely interesting to watch. And since he's already wet their beaks with his Walker Gears and seen their effectiveness, these PF's and other terror cells are more likely to come to him for nuclear launch capable shit.Īnd just as a character, Skullster has such a mesmerizing presence to him. Skullster basically reduced Metal Gear into a marketing tool, something designed to be so over the top and scary (especially its giant robo-dick) that everyone needs to arm themselves once they see this thing in action. He can deactivate nukes whenever he sees fit, but the mere threat of the nukes someone as small as a PF possesses means the U.S., Russia, China and so on lose their power in the global stage.Īnd with nukes rendered useless for deterrence, Skullster's word worms become the true WMD because only he has them, and he can restructure the world as he sees fit since no one would be able to stop him once those word worms start spreading. And he wants to use Sally to make everyone piss themselves into buying what he's selling. And to do that, he wants to arm everyone he can with shitty Metallic Archaea nukes that can be launched with Bipedal Weapons like Sally. Skullster wants to oversaturate the nuclear arms market to render the big nuclear powers of the world powerless. He has even lower level groups like Rogue Coyote spreading rumors of his eventual DIY nuke deals in Africa, getting word of mouth spreading to increase his customer base.Īnd his actual plan is one of the more inventive ones in the series, doing something wholly original with a Metal Gear for once. Entire villages wiped out just as test runs, PF's across the globe arming themselves with his weapons (Walker Gears and eventual Bipedal Weaponry). His impact is felt across the game since we're continuously following his breadcrumbs and seeing the wreckage left in his wake. He wiped out MSF, Big Boss and Zero in one fell swoop, effectively causing the events of MGS2 and 4 to unravel since Zero wasn't around to prevent his baby from spiraling out of control. He's a great villain with a shit ending who wasn't used to his fullest potential because the simple fact is, Kojima's kind of a shit writer.īut in terms of his effectiveness and memorability as a villain? I don't think any villain Kojima's written besides Higgs from Deaf Streaking tops him.Īs a villain, Skullster has a long-lasting impact on the world around him. In conclusion, young Liquid Snake brings so very little to the table in Phantom Pain and makes it actively worse by hijacking the plot then not having the decency to do anything notable with it. The last nail in the coffin is when Eli grabs Sahlelanthropus away from him and kills him with it, which is just a complete deus ex machina, and not in a good way, since Eli just disappears down an unfinished plot thread anyway. But in Phantom Pain, he is utterly ineffectual and we only really remember him for the memes. Ground Zeroes was where he was most effective by far, of course - Skull Face was genuinely horrifying and loathsome in that game. Like, I actually think Skull Face was *potentially* really great as a villain. Oh, and I'm also pretty sore over Eli stealing Skull Face's thunder. It's impossible for Eli to meaningfully develop past this within the timeline of MGSV, because he still needs to end up at the exact same mental place for MGS1.Īs for the cut content/DLC mission with Eli, young Psycho Mantis, and Sahelanthropus, I'm going to steal a line from Writing on Games' video on the subject: the only thing that Mission 51, had it been completed, would have done would be to answer the question of "what happened to Sahelanthropus after Eli took it?" Perhaps that question needed to be answered, but people miss the more important issue: "why did that question need to be asked in the first place?" This is stuff we *already* knew about from MGS1, so nothing changes here. Like, he's angry with Big Boss (and by extension with Venom, who his mistakes as BB) because he feels his father's been a jerk to him. He really only drags the story down with his presence.
